Some songs are better at storytelling than entire novels or movies. The nuances of the music, the lyrics, the tone, and the emotion of the singer quickly take you through the main character’s journey. Several songs come to mind.
“Black Boys on Mopeds” Chillingly Honest Lyrics
No matter how many times I hear Sinead O’Connor’s “Black Boys on Mopeds,” her mesmerizing voice sounds as if she’s singing from a stage a few yards away. Images of war and racial injustice flash through my thoughts.
In a single song, O’Connor portrays the seldom-told ugly side of England’s history. “…It is, in fact, a 3-minute and 53-second reckoning aimed at England, the U.K., and humanity en masse,” blogs Jeff Wood (Retrospective Review: Sinead O’Connor’s “Black Boys On Mopeds” Illuminates the Dark Corners of Our Culture).
Since January 20, 2025, the following two lines of her song have been stuck on replay in my head:
“These are dangerous days
To say what you feel is to dig your own grave.”
Taylor Swift’s “Blank Space”
Every woman who has a habit of falling for “bad boys,” can relate to Taylor Swift’s “Blank Space”. These two lines sum up the fix, the rush, that instant, intense romance provides.
You can tell me when its over
If the high was worth the pain
Novelists spend pages and pages establishing characters, but what better way to describe a spirited young woman with a self-destructive streak than these seven words?:
I’m a nightmare dressed like a daydream
Mike Posner’s “I Took a Pill in Ibiza”
Mike Posner’s “I Took a Pill in Ibiza” laments the aftermath of the endless party enabled by designer drugs and the fall from popularity of a pop singer.
But you don’t want to be high like me
Never really knowing why like me
On his blog, Mike Posner details the evolution of the song, and the elaborate and unusual mixing process he came up with to showcase the lyrics.
Ironically, the song didn’t become a monster hit until a couple of Norwegian music producers called Seeb produced a dance club version of it, which is a story unto its own.
Jim Croce’s “Operator”
The raw emotion in Croce’s haunting voice expresses the battle to overcome heartbreak, “Operator.”
Ten words tell an entire story:
She’s living in L.A. with my best old ex-friend Ray
Music’s Storytelling Magic
Tenisha Anderson, chief operating officer for VIP Records, said in an interview for a March 2025 Los Angeles Times article about their new music museum:
“The music is always going to tell the story. The music is always going to build you up emotionally. The music is always going to be empowering because it comes from the soul,” Tenisha Anderson
